November 27 – Midwives in Ontario need your support

Pay equity is a human right protected by law in Ontario. This protection is especially important for traditionally female-dominated professions like midwifery that face historic and systemic discrimination.

Several independent reports – including one commissioned by government – clearly illustrate midwives are significantly underpaid for their work. However, the government has failed to implement pay equity for midwives.

We need you! You know the real value of midwives. Speak up and support pay equity for midwives.
We need you to support pay equity for midwives:

  • Maybe your midwife listened with care to your prenatal fears.
  • Maybe you experienced your midwives’ dedication through a long labour.
  • Maybe your midwife came to your house because your newborn was having trouble latching.
  • Maybe you experienced exceptional care and know the true value of midwifery.

Next Wednesday – November 27 – the Association of Ontario Midwives is organizing a social media day of action.

We will be asking people to deliver a clear message to the provincial government that midwives are valued and deserve pay equity. We will send out some draft email messages and tweets for you to send to Premier Kathleen Wynne.

If a midwife supported your labour, we will also be asking that you send a photo of your child/ren (regardless of their age) along with your email message to the government. This will help show there is strong support for pay equity for midwives.

Your midwife supported your labour – next week, please take five minutes to support hers.

Stay tuned!
